Why might my child need diagnostic imaging scans?

Paediatric diagnostic imaging is a safe and effective way to investigate your child’s symptoms and understand their health in detail. Depending on their symptoms, your doctor may recommend an MRI, CT scan, X-ray or ultrasound

These imaging tests capture clear, accurate images of the body, helping to detect, diagnose and monitor many conditions.

Our advanced technology and experienced team perform each scan with your child’s wellbeing as their highest priority.

Our approach to paediatric diagnostics

We know that medical tests can be a new and sometimes worrying experience for children. So, we centred our approach on making each visit as calm and reassuring as possible. From the moment you arrive, our friendly team will take the time to explain what will happen in a way your child can understand, helping them feel safe and at ease.

Our experienced professionals perform every scan. They specialise in working with children, using techniques that minimise discomfort and keep them comfortable throughout.

We work closely with your child’s referring doctor to ensure that we tailor our tests to their needs. When the tests are complete, we provide clear and timely results – allowing you to move forward with confidence.

What to expect during your child’s diagnostic imaging appointment

When you arrive, our reception team will greet you and guide you to the imaging department. As children may feel nervous, our staff take extra care to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Before the scan begins, the radiographer will explain the process in simple terms and answer any questions you or your child may have.

The scan is painless and usually takes between 15 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the test.

You may be able to stay in the room with your child for reassurance, and we encourage bringing a favourite toy or comfort item if it helps them feel more settled.

Once the scan is complete, our specialist radiologists will review the images and provide a report to your referring doctor, often on the same day.

Brain and spinal cord issues

We can investigate symptoms such as headaches, seizures or delayed development, and check for conditions like epilepsy, brain tumours or spinal cord problems.

Bones, joints and muscles

Imaging can help assess injuries, fractures, scoliosis or muscle disorders, and guide treatment to support your child’s recovery.

Head

We can carefully examine your child after a fall or accident to assess any damage and ensure they get the proper care.

Heart and blood vessels

Scans can help detect or monitor heart conditions, such as congenital heart disease or irregular heart rhythms, supporting early diagnosis and ongoing care.

Abdomen and internal organs

We can investigate pain, swelling or suspected infection in organs such as the liver, kidneys or intestines to help guide treatment.

Monitoring the progress of diagnosed conditions

If your child has an existing diagnosis, imaging can track changes over time for conditions such as cystic fibrosis, diabetes or certain cancers, allowing us to adapt care when needed.

Paediatric diagnostics frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Paediatric diagnostics can feel unfamiliar for both children and parents, so we have answered some of the most common questions to inform and prepare you before your child’s appointment.

Will my child need to stay still during the scan?

Your child will need to stay as still as possible during the scan so we can capture clear and accurate images. Our team is skilled at working with children and will explain the process in an age-appropriate way to help them feel relaxed. We may use cushions, straps or other supports to keep them comfortable and in position.

Are imaging scans safe for children?

Imaging scans are very safe when carried out by our experienced team. MRI and ultrasound do not use any radiation, and while CT scans do, we always keep the amount as low as possible.

All scans are non-invasive, which means nothing goes inside the body, and they are usually painless. If we need to use a special dye to make certain areas easier to see, we will explain this to you first and make sure it is safe for your child.

Can I stay with my child during their scan?

You can typically stay with your child during the scan to offer reassurance and comfort. You will need to remove any metal objects before entering the room for their MRI to ensure your safety. Our friendly team will be by your side to guide you through each step so you feel supported throughout.

How long will the scan take?

The length of the scan depends on the imaging we’re carrying out. Ultrasound scans are often completed within 15 to 30 minutes, while MRI and CT scans can take longer. We’ll give you a clear idea of timing before your appointment so you can plan your day accordingly.
