Ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis

This ultrasound assesses organs such as the kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen, checking for lumps, cysts, aneurysms and other abnormalities. Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive, and does not use ionising radiation.

You will be required to fast for six hours prior to the scan as food can show up in the digestive tract and obscure potential abnormalities. For the pelvic scan, you will need to drink 4-6 cups of water beforehand to ensure a full bladder.

During the scan, you will lie down in a warm room and have ultrasound jelly applied.

Blood Test Details

Haematology
Biochemistry
Endocrinology
Urinalysis

Includes full blood count. This checks the types and number of cells in your blood, including red and white blood cells and platelets. This is a useful indicator of your general health and can help detect a wide range of medical disorders. If an abnormality is found, your doctor will likely send you for further diagnostic tests to help find the underlying problem.

  • Kidney Function – This tests how well the kidney is filtering the blood plus the overall balance of electrolytes and minerals in the body.
  • Liver Function Tests – This measures enzymes and proteins produced by the liver to give a picture of how well the liver is functioning or detect any liver cell damage.
  • Bone Health – This profile includes calcium and uric acid: two compounds that give a good indication of your bone health.
  • Diabetes – This profile includes glycated haemoglobin to indicate how well controlled your blood sugar levels have been over the past 3 months and the direct blood glucose level tells us how high or low your blood sugar level is on the day of the blood test.
  • Lipid Profile – Measures the amount of good and bad cholesterol in the circulation.
  • Iron Status – This profile measures both the direct iron levels and ferritin levels. Low iron and ferritin could indicate iron deficiency anaemia which could explain symptoms of tiredness, exhaustion and breathlessness.
  • Inflammatory Marker – C Reactive Protein is a marker of inflammation in the body. It can be used to identify infection or monitor the response to treatment for an infection or inflammatory condition.
  • Vitamin D – Vitamin D helps to regulate the absorption of calcium, phosphate and magnesium in the gut. It is also vital for bone growth and health. It can be a useful investigation in some forms of bone disease or gut pathologies.
  • Thyroid Function- This profile measures Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and Thyroxine (T4) to indicate if the thyroid is over or under active.
  • CA 125- The tumour marker to detect or monitor ovarian cancer. (Female only)
  • Testosterone- Measuring testosterone can help to identify the cause of erectile dysfunction, infertility, premature/delayed puberty or the male menopause. (Male only)
  • Prostate Screen (Prostate Specific Antigen)- A blood test to help detect or monitor prostate cancer. (Male only)

This is a urine test to screen for a wide range of disorders including a urinary tract infection, kidney disease and diabetes. If an abnormality is found, results are analysed in conjunction with results from other diagnostic tests to help identify the underlying problem.
