MRA Scan London

A Magnetic Resonance Angiogram (MRA) scan is often recommended for the management of Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm (TAA) and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA). We offer high quality and accurate MRA scanning at 9 Harley Street, London.

What is an MRA scan?

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) is a kind of specialist MRI scan that looks specifically at the blood vessels. A standard MRI cannot provide particularly good images of the blood vessels. An MRA scan is typically used to check for and monitor aneurysms. An MRA scan may also be recommended if you or a family member has previously suffered from a blood clot or stroke.

An MRA is a very safe scan, although since it uses a powerful magnet, you may not be able to get one if you have any metal devices in your body such as pacemakers.

What does an MRA scan look for?

An MRA scan looks at the blood vessels and can be used to analyse your blood flow. It is usually used to look for signs of conditions affecting the blood vessels, such as clots or aneurysms, which show up as blockages or bulges in the blood vessels.

What to expect on the day of your MRA scan

  • You will remove any clothing, jewellery, or other objects that may interfere with the scan and put on a gown.
  • During an MRA scan, you lie flat inside the magnetic resonance imaging scanner.
  • The table will slide into position, placing you inside the MRI scanner.
  • You will need to lie still during the scanning process. Any movements can blur the images and cause the results to be less accurate.
  • The full scan may take an hour or longer. This will depend on the type and number of blood vessels that your consultant wishes to examine.

After your MRA

When you are done, the technologist will return to the exam room and slide you out of the scanner. They will remove the IV if you had dye for your test.

Unless you had medicine to help you relax, you can usually get back to your normal activities.

Your doctor will call you with the results of the exam. You may need more tests, depending on the findings.
