CT Colonography

A CT colonography (or virtual colonoscopy) is a CT scan, performed by a radiology doctor, which accurately identifies the benign precursor of bowel cancer, the advanced colonic polyp. CT colonography can also help exclude cancer in other organs such as the pancreas and kidneys.

What is a CT colonography scan for?

Colon cancer (also known as bowel cancer) is the most common cause of cancer death amongst non-smokers. However, it is easily treated if picked up early on. It is therefore important to get screened regularly for any signs of cancer, particularly if you are over the age of 45.

We offer a CT colonography service at our renowned Diagnostic & Imaging Department in central London. A CT colonography is a considerably less invasive and disruptive option than a traditional colonoscopy. The scan can very accurately identify signs of bowel cancer, and can also identify its precursor, the advanced colonic polyp. While this polyp is benign, its removal will ensure that it cannot develop into colon cancer.

What's the difference between a CT colonography and a colonoscopy?

  • A CT colonography is much less invasive
  • Both require a laxative to ensure the colon is empty.
  • A CT colonography takes significantly less time.
  • There is no need to be sedated for a colonography, meaning you can return to your usual activities afterwards.
  • A CT colonography involves a small amount of radiation.
  • A colonography may also detect other issues in your abdomen, whereas a colonoscopy only screens the colon
