How does the full body scan work?

This innovative technology, combined with the expertise of our highly experienced consultant radiologists, means we can detect cancer lesions around 1 centimetre, ensuring early diagnosis of difficult-to-detect cancers and effective treatment.

What does the full body MRI scan look for?

A DWI MRI scan covers the entire body (from the head to the upper thigh). It scans all the vital organs for cancer, including the pancreas, kidney, bladder and spine.

The scan can also detect more common cancers, such as bowel, lung, breast and prostate. However, it does not replace well-established and effective screening programmes, such as CT colonography, mammograms and ultrasounds.

Prof. Anwar Padhani is an internationally recognised Oncological Radiologist at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, London, UK. He is Professor of Cancer Imaging at the Institute of Cancer Research, London. He is a trustee of the International Cancer Imaging Society and co-chair of the International Prostate PI-RADS committee.

Professor in functional cancer imaging at the Institute of Cancer Research and consultant radiologist in functional imaging at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Professor Koh has been published in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. In 2009, he co-edited a book, ‘Diffusion-weighted MRI: Applications in the Body’.

After booking your full body MRI cancer screening, you’ll have a phone call with our cancer screening doctor, who will go over your medical history and discuss any concerns.

Virtual Consultation

After booking your full body MRI cancer screening, you’ll have a phone call with our cancer screening doctor, who will go over your medical history and discuss any concerns.
Upon arrival at 9 Harley Street, we’ll direct you to our diagnostic suite, giving you a gown to change into for the scan. A radiographer will take you through a safety check.

Preparing for the Scan

The radiologist will position you on the scanner and begin the screening. You can speak with the radiographers throughout the scan.

The MRI Scan

The process will take around 90 minutes, but the total scanning time is roughly an hour. After the scan, you can leave the our diagnostic suite and return to your usual activities.

Can I book a Full Body MRI Cancer Screening without a referral?

You don’t need a GP referral to have the scan.

Our cancer screening doctor will have a pre-assessment phone call (virtual consultation) with you before your scan to address any specific medical concerns. Once this consultation has taken place, they will provide the referral needed for your cancer scan.

Your health screening results and report will usually be available within 7 to 10 days after having your full body cancer scan appointment. We will email the results to you. We can also post your results if preferred, but they may take slightly longer to arrive.

Will my health screening results be shared with my GP?

We will not share your health screening results and report them to your GP unless you request it.
