Why get a bowel cancer screening?

Bowel cancer screening is an important health check, especially for people over the age of 50.

We use computerised tomography (CT) colonography, a safe, accurate and minimally invasive scan that provides detailed images of the colon, abdomen and kidneys. This test can help identify early signs of cancer and other potential problems, supporting early treatment and better outcomes.

Spotting bowel cancer early makes a big difference. In its early stages, bowel cancer is easier to treat and less likely to spread. If you’re noticing symptoms like blood in your stool, changes in your bowel habits, unexplained weight loss or ongoing abdominal pain, a screening can help find the cause.

Be proactive in protecting your health by booking your bowel cancer screening today.

How does a bowel cancer screening work?

At the Phoenix Hospital Group, with a bowel cancer screening, we offer a CT (computed tomography) colonography instead of a traditional colonoscopy  to examine your colon and other parts of your abdomen, including the kidneys, liver and pancreas. In comparison to a standard colonoscopy, it is less invasive.

The scan takes place at our prestigious clinic in Harley Street in London, and it takes less time than a colonoscopy — roughly 25–30 minutes.

You will need to take a laxative before the scan to ensure that your bowel is empty, but there is no need for sedation prior.

What is CT Colonography?

CT Colonography is a cutting-edge, non-invasive imaging test used to detect bowel cancer and its early warning signs, such as advanced colonic polyps. As a modern alternative to colonoscopy, it’s often the preferred choice for patients due to its comfort and convenience.

By providing a detailed view of the colon and surrounding organs, CT Colonography offers peace of mind through early detection or by confidently ruling out disease for both patients and their doctors

To book a bowel cancer screening simply call one of our dedicated patient advisers who would be delighted to assist you. Please call 020 7079 2100 or you can book in a call with a patient adviser to discuss more details and answer any questions you might have.

Who is a bowel cancer screening for?

The cancer risk grows as we age, particularly once we’re over 45.  Bowel cancers become harder to treat the more developed they are, and by the time symptoms are showing, the cancer may be advanced.

Patients have many reasons for wanting to use our bowel cancer screening service, but the most common are:

  • You have lost family and friends to cancer and want peace of mind that you don’t have it
  • You’ve had cancer before, but want reassurance that it hasn’t returned or spread
  • You are committed to staying healthy and want to include a bowel cancer screening as part of your health screening for peace of mind
  • You are concerned about your health and worried about your current lifestyle

Bowel cancer screening is one of the most vital health checks for both men and women aged 45 and over.

Early detection can be life-saving and the good news is, you don’t need a GP referral. If you’re 45 or older, you can self-refer and book directly with us today.

If you’re under 45 and seeking peace of mind, screening is still available. Please note, that this may require a virtual GP consultation which would be an additional cost.

What does bowel cancer screening test for?

Our CT colonography scan is highly effective at spotting colonic polyps. These are small growths that are often harmless but can sometimes turn into bowel cancer if left untreated. Finding and removing polyps early reduces your future cancer risk.

This scan also examines nearby organs, such as the pancreas and kidneys, giving you a broader picture of your abdominal health.

Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or simply want peace of mind, our private bowel screening service can help. We support both preventive screening for those who may be at higher risk and tests to investigate new or ongoing digestive symptoms, providing clear answers and guidance so you can take the next step with confidence.

What are the benefits of a bowel cancer screning?

There are many reasons why people choose to have a private bowel cancer screening with Phoenix Hospital Group. Our CT colonography offers early detection of cancer as well as important insights into your overall abdominal health.

The benefits include:

  • Minimally invasive – the scan is gentle and usually doesn’t require sedation, making it a more comfortable alternative to a traditional colonoscopy
  • Quick recovery – many people can return to normal activities straight after their appointment
  • Detailed imaging – the scan provides clear views of the bowel and nearby organs such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys, ovaries, aorta and lymph nodes
  • Wider diagnostic insight – it can help identify conditions like diverticular disease, appendix problems and the effects of endometriosis (overgrowth of tissue) on the bowel
  • Detects serious risks – it can also detect or rule out an abdominal aortic aneurysm (a bulge in the main blood vessel in the abdomen)
  • Supports treatment planning – if a polyp or cancer is found, the scan offers valuable information to guide the next steps. If further tests like a colonoscopy are needed, many people with private medical insurance can use their policy to cover the cost

Screening offers peace of mind by helping you take control of your health with clear answers and timely care.

FAQs

Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions about bowel cancer screening.

What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?

It’s important to be aware of the common symptoms of bowel cancer.

If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s worth seeking advice and considering a screening:

  • Blood in your stool
  • Persistent changes in bowel habits (such as diarrhoea or constipation)
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Ongoing abdominal discomfort, bloating or cramps
  • Feeling like your bowel hasn’t fully emptied

These symptoms don’t always mean cancer, but it’s important to rule out serious conditions early.

Can I get bowel cancer screening before 60?

Yes, you can. While the NHS bowel cancer screening programme usually starts at age 60, private screening is available sooner. At Phoenix Hospital Group, we offer private bowel cancer screening for anyone over 50 or earlier if you have symptoms or a family history of the disease.

Early screening helps detect potential issues before they become more serious and gives you quicker access to treatment if needed.

What is a CT scan?

A CT scan uses X-rays to produce highly detailed images of the body, allowing the radiologist (a doctor trained in interpreting scans) to identify abnormalities in the organs of the body.

Scans take a few seconds, although you will usually be in the scanner room for a few minutes whilst the radiography team helps to plan your scan.

CT scans are usually quick and comfortable, and most people find them easy to manage. In some cases, we may need to place a small tube into a vein in your arm to give a contrast dye. This helps us get the clearest and most accurate images possible.

Is this test just for my bowel, or will it show anything else?

Our bowel cancer screening will provide information about organs outside the bowel within your abdomen and pelvis, including the detection of an aortic aneurysm and review your liver, pancreas, spleen, pelvic organs and kidneys.

I’ve struggled with strong laxatives before. Is there an easier alternative to prepare for the scan?

If you’ve found full bowel preparation difficult in the past, we can often use a gentler alternative. This involves drinking a special liquid that helps highlight the contents of your bowel during the scan, so we can clearly tell the difference between normal material and anything that may need further attention, such as polyps or signs of cancer.

This liquid may cause some loose bowel movements, but most people find it much easier to manage than standard, strong laxatives.

Does the scan involve radiation, and is it safe?

CT scans use a small amount of X-ray radiation. The dose from a CT colonography is very low – roughly the same as the amount of natural background radiation most people receive over one to three years in the UK.

While any exposure to radiation carries a very small theoretical risk, there is no evidence of harm from the low levels used in medical imaging.

At Phoenix Hospital Group, we follow strict safety standards and use the lowest dose necessary to get clear, accurate results. We avoid using radiation in younger patients unless needed and always aim to keep your exposure as low as possible.

Will I need sedation, and can I drive home afterwards?

Sedation is not needed for this test. Most people find it slightly uncomfortable at times, but any discomfort usually settles quickly once the scan is finished. Because there is no sedation, you’ll be able to drive yourself home afterwards.

Can I have this test if I don't have any bowel symptoms?

You can have this test whether you have bowel symptoms or not. However, many insurance companies only cover the test if you have symptoms of bowel cancer, which means you may need to pay for your screening yourself.

Are there any risks of a bowel cancer screening?

As with any bowel test, there is a very small risk of a tear in the bowel lining. This is rare and happens in fewer than 1 in 3000 cases. Most people who experience this have no symptoms, and very few need further treatment. If any medication is needed during your scan, the radiographer will explain any possible side effects beforehand.

What happens if my bowel cancer screening results are abnormal?

If your results show something unusual, such as polyps, we’ll explain what this means and talk through your next steps, which may include further tests or treatment.

If further tests are required, we may try to organise them for the same day – especially if this means you do not have to have another bowel preparation.

If polyps are found, will I need to have them removed?

Not always. If any polyps are found, your doctor will talk you through the options. Larger polyps (over 1 centimetre) are usually removed or biopsied during a follow-up endoscopy. Smaller polyps may not need treatment and can often be monitored with future scans.

Every case is different, and your radiologist will work with you and your doctor to decide what’s best for your health.

What’s the difference between an NHS bowel cancer screening and private bowel cancer screening?

The NHS bowel cancer screening programme uses a home test kit to check for blood in your stool. This test is sent automatically every two years to people aged 60 to 74 in England. While it’s a useful tool, it can miss early signs of cancer or other abnormalities.

Our private bowel cancer screening using CT colonography – a detailed, in-clinic scan that produces images of your bowel and surrounding organs. Unlike the NHS kit, our screening is available to anyone over 50 or with symptoms, and you don’t need to wait for an invitation. You’ll also receive fast results and direct access to leading bowel health specialists.

Is bowel cancer screening painful?

CT colonography is generally well tolerated. Some people feel mild discomfort when gas is introduced into the bowel, but this usually passes quickly.

How often should I have a bowel cancer screening?

The frequency of your bowel cancer screenings depends on several factors, such as your age and risk factors. Those over 50 may benefit from more regular screenings (every two years). Similarly, people with a higher risk of bowel cancer may also need more regular screenings.

If you’re unsure when you should have a bowel cancer screening, contact our team today. We’ll help you understand what’s best for your needs.
