What Is A Sleep Clinic?

A sleep clinic is where medical experts investigate and treat sleep disorders. At The Phoenix Hospital Group’s private sleep clinic in London, we use state-of-the-art technology to diagnose sleep disorders such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea and treat them.

Our sleep clinic team is made up of doctors who specialise in sleep and sleep issues, as well as psychologists, physiologists, and other sleep health experts. Following a discussion and review of your medical history, we will start on diagnosis and treatment. In addition to adults, we also offer treatment to children aged 12 and upwards.

Understanding Sleep Problems

There is a large number of people in the UK who are suffering from sleep disorders and difficulty sleeping. Sleep is absolutely vital to our body’s ability to function healthily. If we do not get enough sleep, everything starts to suffer, from our immune system to our mental health.

As we get older and our bodies change, the amount of sleep we need starts to change too. Everyone’s specific sleep needs are different, and it is important to make sure that you are getting the right amount. Factors that can impact our sleep include:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Caffeine
  • Noise
  • Blue light

Sleep Disorders We Treat

There are many different sleep disorders out there, and some are more common than others. What they have in common is that they all have an impact on our ability to sleep properly, which can have a serious knock-on effect on our physical and mental health.

Some of the disorders that we treat at our private sleep clinic in London are:

Sleep Apnoea / Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is when your airways are blocked during sleep. Symptoms include heavy snoring and waking up feeling like you are gasping or choking.

Insomnia

Insomnia is a broad term and includes sleep-onset insomnia (inability to fall asleep), sleep-maintained insomnia (inability to stay asleep) and mixed insomnia (a combination of the two).

REM Sleep Behaviour Disorder

If you suffer from this disorder, your body may remain active during REM sleep. You may act out or vocalise your vivid dreams.

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking is a disorder in which a person walks or does other activities while remaining asleep. Your eyes may be open, and you may talk while sleepwalking but you are not awake. This usually occurs during deep sleep.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)

PLMD is a rare sleep disorder that is characterised by repetitive lower limb twitches, cramps or jerks during sleep. The movements often disrupt sleep, resulting in tiredness throughout the day.

Narcolepsy

When you suffer from narcolepsy, you feel exhausted no matter how much sleep you get during the night. You may fall asleep very suddenly, regardless of where you are or what you are doing.

This list is not exhaustive, and our private sleep clinic in London can help with a wide range of other sleep disorders. Get in touch with us to find out more.

How We Can Help

At Phoenix Hospital’s private sleep clinic in London, we will work with you to identify the root cause of your sleep disorder and set out the best course of treatment. Our team of experts have state-of-the-art technology at their disposal but will start by sitting down with you to discuss any problems or issues. We place patient care at the forefront of everything we do, and we will address any concerns that you may have about your treatment going forward.

Once we have talked about your specific sleep issue and got a clear idea of your general health, then we will carry out a series of investigations to help us get to the bottom of what is causing your specific sleep disorder. We have a wide range of different treatments available to you, which you can read more about below.

Treatments for sleeping conditions

One of our consultants will fully review you and your medical history addressing concerns that you may have regarding your sleep and general health. Using this information, we can investigate further diagnosing potential issues or disorders. Looking to ensure that you can get on with your daily activities after a good night’s sleep, without the stress of not trying to get a good night’s sleep.

FIND A SPECIALIST
Overnight Oximetry Test

We designed this oxygen sleep study for people that may suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). We apply a small clip on the finger or a small cannula in the nose whilst sleeping to monitor oxygen levels and heart rate during the night. The study lasts up to two nights and the sleep team can analyse results and recommend OSA treatment if needed.

CPAP Machine

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is offered for people that are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea. CPAP requires a mask that is placed over the face that delivers oxygen during sleep. This ensures that the air pressure of the device keeps airways open throughout the night leading to a more comfortable sleep.

Polysomnography (PSG)

Polysomnography (PSG) involves an overnight stay in hospital to measure variables which are associated with sleep using sticker pads that measure brain waves, eye and muscle movements when both awake and during sleep. We combine this information with information from the overnight oximetry test and information from a light band on the chest to measure breathing. This comprehensive review of your sleep allows the diagnosis of several disorders.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLTs)

The multiple sleep latency tests (MSLTs) are performed overnight after a polysomnography (PSG). A consultant will decide if this test is necessary as not all patients will require this test. MSLTs investigate daytime sleepiness (narcolepsy). You will keep sensors, which are used throughout your PSG and will be given the opportunity to have a nap during the day.
