What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a type of cosmetic surgery designed to remove any excess or undesirable fat and skin from the lower stomach area. This leads to a smaller, tighter abdomen.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

While there is no one ideal type of candidate for tummy tuck surgery, and you should discuss your suitability with your plastic surgeon, there are some factors that would make recovery easier.

Ideally, you will have had a stable weight for at least 6 months, and have a BMI of less than 30, as this will reduce your risk of wound healing problems. To give you the best chances of seamless recovery, you should be generally fit and healthy and be a non-smoker.

The most important thing is that you have realistic expectations of the surgery, associated risks and the outcome for you and your body.

Types of tummy tuck we offer

Depending on how much excess skin and fat you are looking to remove, we offer several different types of tummy tuck. Most people opt for the standard tummy tuck, however depending on your individual requirements, your surgeon may suggest an alternative.

During the surgery, you will be under general anaesthetic. Depending on the type of tummy tuck, you may be able to leave on the same day, or you may be required to stay overnight.

Standard tummy tuck

This involves a horizontal incision from hip to hip and the use of liposuction to remove fat from the stomach.

Brazilian tummy tuck

This involves taking out an ellipse of skin between the tummy and pubic area, and liposuction to remove the fat.

Mini tummy tuck

A surgeon carries out a mini tummy tuck on the lower abdominal area, removing fat from between the lower tummy and pubic area. This is ideal if you have small amounts of fat or loose skin.

Full lower body lift

A full lower body lift includes a standard tummy tuck plus the removal of fat and skin around your hips and back. It lifts up the outer thighs, buttocks and pubic area. This is recommended for weight loss patients.

Tummy tuck recovery

The recovery process for tummy tuck surgery is usually fairly straightforward. You will need to wear a compression garment for 6 weeks.

You may wish to take 1-2 weeks off work, and you will be advised to take it easy for the first week following surgery. You should not go to the gym or do any kind of strenuous activity for 6 weeks.

You will see a nurse for a post-operative appointment one week after your surgery, and you will see your surgeon for a follow-up about 3-4 weeks afterwards. In this follow-up, your surgeon will assess your recovery progress and ensure everything is healing as it should.
