Ear Micro-Suction

Micro-Suction is used to remove excess ear wax build up in the ear canal. Ear wax is a natural part of the ear’s defence and its natural flow is intended to remove dirt, foreign bodies and other debris out of the ear canal.

Grommet Insertion (for adults)

Grommets are used for the treatment of ‘glue ear’ and recurrent ear problems in the middle ear. A grommet is a very small tube that is inserted into the ear to help drain fluid.

Nasal Cautery

Nasal Cautery, is a technique undertaken in an outpatient setting to stop a major nosebleed.

Flexible Laryngoscopy

A flexible laryngoscopy is a minor procedure to look at the voice box and back of the nose and throat.

It is primarily used as a means of finding causes of voice problems, swallowing problems and pain in the throat and ear.

Nasal and Sinus Endoscopy

This endoscopy can take place within the outpatient clinic and allows the Consultant a detailed look into the patients sinus cavities and nasal passages. It it often the most effective way for a specialist to make an initial evaluation of the patients problems.

FEES- Flexible Endoscopic Examination of Swallowing

This is a diagnostic procedure which enables the ENT Consultant to look into the nose and throat with a thin flexible endoscope and visualise the larynx (voice box).

This study allows for assessment of the anatomy as well as direct observation of swallowing function and control of the movement of secretions, liquids and food.

Audiometry

We have on site audiometry facilities and are able to undertake hearing tests in a sound proof environment on-site at the time of consultation. Our audiometrician is able to tailor make swim-moulds and musicians’ ear plugs. We also supply hearing aids.

Surgical Services

At our surgical sites at both Weymouth Street Hospital and Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford, we offer treatments for a wide range of Ear, Nose and Throat conditions.

Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is a condition in which the sinuses are inflamed, and the condition does not resolve itself within three months. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis include a stuffy or runny nose, pain or discomfort around the eyes and difficulty breathing through the nose. Patients may also experience a loss of or reduced sense of smell, headaches, jaw pain and a cough.

There are a number of causes of chronic sinusitis, the most common being an infection of the sinuses. People may also experience chronic sinusitis if they have allergies, nasal polyps or a deviated septum. Patients should seek a diagnosis if they are experiencing the symptoms of chronic sinusitis. The condition will not go away on its own, and getting expert advice and treatment is crucial to ensure that the issue is resolved quickly and effectively.

Broken Nose & Trauma Treatment

Nose trauma must be treated quickly to ensure that no permanent damage is done to the vital nasal area. There are many ways that a broken nose or other nasal trauma can occur. Some of the most common causes of trauma to the nose include:

  • Sports
  • Fights
  • Car accidents
  • Falls

If anyone experiences any trauma to the body or face, it is vital to get checked out immediately. There may be underlying damage or issues that are not obvious, and a medical professional will be able to rule these out. An ENT doctor should be consulted immediately for any damage to the nose, and treatments range from icing the injury to surgical correction. Surgery will usually only be required in the most serious of cases.

Swollen Adenoids

Adenoids are small patches of tissue at the back of the throat, located above the tonsils. They aren’t easily visible like the tonsils, so any issue with them can be tough to spot. Swollen adenoids can cause a range of symptoms similar to a cold or sinusitis. The most common include:

  • Stuffy nose
  • Snoring
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose

Swollen adenoids are most common in children, though they can occur in people of all ages. The treatment options include medications like steroids or surgery to remove the adenoids entirely. Adenoids are not an essential part of our bodies, meaning removal can be the most effective and long-lasting treatment available.

Tonsil Stones Treatment

Tonsil stones are hard pieces of bacteria or debris from the mouth that can form on the tonsils. They are a common condition and will not usually require treatment unless they are causing problems for the patient. If infection occurs, or the issue recurs often, then tonsil stones will need to be treated by an expert ENT to ensure there are no ongoing or long-lasting implications. Symptoms of tonsil stones include:

  • Bad breath
  • Sore throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Coughing
  • Swelling

Treatment can include antibiotics if there is an infection, surgical removal of the tonsil stones and removal of the tonsils themselves. The treatment used will depend on the severity of the issue and the impact the tonsil stones are having on the patient.

Chronic Hoarseness Treatment

Chronic hoarseness is most commonly caused by laryngitis and can range from mild to severe in nature. Unlike acute laryngitis, chronic laryngitis will not typically go away on its own and will need to be treated by an ENT doctor. Causes of chronic hoarseness can include infection, overuse of the vocal cords or irritation. It is essential to understand the cause of laryngitis to ensure the correct treatment is given.

Diagnosis can usually be done via laryngoscopy, where a doctor uses a small mirror and light to look at the back of the throat. A biopsy may also be done to identify the type of infection or issue present. Treatment options include medications like antibiotics and steroids. Lifestyle changes may also be recommended by an ENT doctor, including:

  • Resting the voice
  • Humidifying the air at home
  • Not smoking
  • Reducing alcohol intake

Ruptured Eardrums

A ruptured eardrum occurs when there is a hole or tear in the tissue between the ear canal and the eardrum. It can make the ear vulnerable to infection and can cause temporary or long-lasting hearing loss. Ruptured eardrums can be caused by:

  • Infection
  • Changes in pressure in the ear, like when flying
  • Blasts
  • Loud sounds
  • Head trauma

Patients can prevent ruptured ear drums from occurring by using ear plugs that can stabilise the pressure in the ear and reduce damage caused by loud noises. A ruptured ear drum will usually heal on its own, but in some cases, intervention from an ENT doctor may be required. Treatments include an eardrum patch or surgery to correct the hole or tear in the ear drum.

Chronic Ear Infections

Chronic ear infection is categorised as ear infections that return consistently or that don’t clear up to begin with. Chronic ear infections can cause serious and permanent damage to the ear and hearing if left untreated. Chronic ear infection is often caused by a blockage in one of the draining tubes of the ear, which becomes infected. Symptoms of chronic ear infection can include:

  • Ear pain
  • Pressure in the ear
  • Fever
  • Pus leaking from the ear
  • Hearing loss or changes in hearing

Antibiotics are the most common treatment option for chronic ear infections. If there is damage to the ear as a result, an ENT doctor may also recommend surgery to repair the damage or to clear out a difficult-to-treat infection.
