What does the Memory Clinic offer?

Investigation and Assessment

Blood tests will be performed to screen for easily treatable causes of memory problems such as vitamin deficiencies.

We also use cognitive tests to provide an objective assessment of your memory and thinking. These include verbal and written questions designed to highlight the areas of your memory and thinking where you would benefit from some help.

Usually advanced brain imaging such as an MRI scan of the brain is undertaken to look at the brain from a structural point of view to understand whether any underlying neurodegenerative issues may be causing your symptoms.

Investigation and Assessment

Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone to enable effective management strategies to improve your quality of life.

When you receive your diagnoses differs for each patient. In some cases, we can make a diagnosis on the same day. For others, further scans, such as advanced brain imaging, or tests may be required.

Once a diagnosis has been made, we can offer a full range of support and treatment strategies.

Diagnosis

Treatment

Once you receive your diagnosis, you will have a feedback consultation with our memory specialist to talk about the best next steps. This could include:

  • A discussion and advice about how we can best support you
  • Advice for leading a brain-healthy life, drawing on latest research that shows you can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias through a combination of lifestyle changes
  • Cognitive enhancing medication can be an option for some including those with Alzheimer’s

We will share a report detailing your diagnosis and management plan with you and your GP to ensure a consistent treatment approach.
