Cardiac diagnostic testing methods

There are four main diagnostic testing and imaging methods that we use here at the Cardiac Clinic at Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford to test your cardiovascular health. Find out what they are and how they work by reading below.

Holter Monitoring

A Holter monitor is a portable ECG device that a patient has to wear for up to 14 days. The device causes minimal interruption to daily life. No maintenance or special attention is required when wearing the monitor.

The monitor collects all the data needed in a single monitoring period, and this uninterrupted data collection leads to greater arrhythmia detection.

ECHO

An ECHO (echocardiogram) evaluates the structure, chambers and valves of the Heart. It uses ultrasound images to provide high resolution images directly to the cardiologist to be evaluated in real time. It allows the cardiologist to check for clots inside the heart, blocked arteries and to assess its overall functionality.

By taking photos of the different components of the heart, our cardiologists can monitor its size and chambers, and check for specific issues such as cardiomyopathy and endocarditis.

ECG Monitoring

An ECG monitor is a medical device that is used to record the heartbeat over an extended period of time. It involves placing electrodes on the skin to detect the heart’s electrical impulses.

The ECG monitor can be used to record from anywhere between 24 hours to a period of 7 days. After recording, the results are evaluated by cardiologists who check for anything unusual or concerning. This test is often performed following the results from a standard ECG.

The device is applied by the cardiologist, and then kept on throughout your normal daily activities. It is small, entirely painless, and subtle enough to be relatively un-noticeable and unobtrusive.

Blood Pressure Monitoring

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is a test used to measure your blood pressure continuously over an extended period of time, usually for 24 hours. It is a commonly used tool for monitoring hypertension, and it allows for consistent recording, even during the night when you are asleep.
