Cardiac diagnostic testing methods

There are four main diagnostic testing and imaging methods that we use here at the Cardiac Clinic at Phoenix Hospital Chelmsford to test your cardiovascular health. Find out what they are and how they work by reading below.

ECG monitoring

ECG monitoring is a simple and easy way of investigating heart health. Probes are placed on the surface of the skin with electrodes that detect electrical impulses of the heart, identifying abnormalities and offering information about the rhythm and condition of the heart. This is completely painless and non-invasive, and once finished, you can proceed with your day as normal.

Holter monitoring

Similarly, a Holter monitor is a portable ECG device. The patient is often required to wear it for up to 14 days so that sufficient data can be collected about the way the heart functions over a long period of time. This data is uninterrupted and consistent meaning it offers more effective arrhythmia detection. You can continue living as normal throughout the monitoring process without it hindering any activities.

Echocardiogram (ECHO)

This procedure uses high-resolution ultrasound images to reveal the structure, chambers and valves of the heart. This means that a cardiologist can directly view the inner workings of the heart in real-time and check for any abnormalities such as blocked arteries or clots at the same time as assessing its overall function. This is more advanced and detailed than ECG monitoring and can take around 20 minutes to complete.

Blood pressure monitoring

We also use ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) which allows the cardiologist to measure your blood pressure for an extended period of time, usually during a 24-hour timeframe, even while you are asleep. It is effective in detecting and monitoring hypertension.
