Inguinal

An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of tissue (such as a bit of intestine) through the abdominal muscles, causing a noticeable bulge that can be painful. Inguinal hernias tend to be more common in men.

Femoral

Femoral hernias occur in the groin, just above the line between the legs and abdomen. They are much less common than inguinal hernias, but more likely to occur in women.

Umbilical

Umbilical hernias occur when a part of the intestine pokes through an opening in your abdominal muscles right by the belly button. These are common in babies, and often go away on their own, however for adults, umbilical hernias are very likely to require surgery.

Hiatus

A hiatus hernia is a protrusion of part of the stomach through an opening in the diaphragm.

Type of hernia surgery we offer

We offer two types of surgical treatment for hernias: open and laparoscopic. Your consultant will make a decision about the best option for you based on the type of hernia you have, your symptoms, and your medical history. This decision will be based on producing the most effective results with the most minimally invasive method.

Open Surgery

A single, larger incision is made near the hernia so that it can be reduced (pushed back inside). This is also done under general anaesthetic before being closed using stitches.

Keyhole (laparoscopic surgery)

Several small incisions are made to the abdomen whilst under general anaesthetic. Some gas is then used to inflate the abdomen so that the surgeon can safely operate and repair the hernia using a fibreoptic camera.
