Reports to: Outpatient Nurse Manager

Location: 9 Harley Street or other PHG locations

Hours: 37.5 hours/week


Role purpose: 

To lead and manage the pre-assessment patient pathway ultimately ensuring patient safety and prevention of same day surgical cancellations.


Duties & Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Clinical: To work as an autonomous practitioner with specialist skills, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care within protocols.

  • Undertake a risk assessment for the patient anaesthetically and surgically
  • Carrying a caseload and organise own workload
  • To act as the named nurse to all patients within the pre-assessment service
  • To undertake a nursing assessment, obtaining a detailed past medical history and ordering of appropriate clinical investigations
  • Once assessed, to identify patients at risk and invite for assessment in person, perform investigations and referrals as necessary
  • Implement intervention based on the results of the assessment and investigations
  • Undertake MRSA screening according to infection control policy
  • Identify cultural requirements, communication and other special needs
  • Obtains further specialist advice as required
  • Undertake a role in health promotion
  • Advise patients on their pre-operative medication requirements
  • Maintain accurate patient records, completing documentation to ensure seamless multidisciplinary communication
  • Ensure 100% compliance with hand hygiene and infection control policy and procedures
  • Develop and implement service protocols on nationally accredited guidelines and valid research from recognised bodies
  • Participate in continuous audit of the pre-assessment service
  • Compile reports as required to communicate efficacy and shortcomings of the service to the Senior Management team
  • Ensure adherence to requirements from external bodies such as PROMS, and the National Joint Registry Education
  • To support the wider nursing team when the need arises
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as required and requested by the nurse Manager and/or Clinical Director


In addition:

  • Promote effective communication within all Phoenix departments
  • Adhere to the hospital/clinic and nursing/radiology policies, procedures and standards
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Contribute to the achievement of the PHG budget by promoting the cost effective utilization of resources
  • Ensure safety checks, consent forms and any other necessary documentation is completed appropriately
  • Report to Clinical Director any queries or concerns
  • Support colleagues and work co-operatively to promote good team morale within PHG
  • Respond appropriately to telephone calls
  • Be able to initiate clinic emergency policies and procedures
  • Participate and take responsibility in personal development, mandatory training and appraisal system
  • Become competent in the use of the in-house computer systems
  • Show initiative and work as a team
  • Take a lead on problem solving when required

Duties include:

  • To ensure safe and secure storage of patient details including card details
  • To implement PHG’s confidentiality policy


Qualifications / Skills & Knowledge / Qualities:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Post registration experience in a surgical environment essential
  • Experience in a private hospital environment would be an advantage, but not essential
  • Ability to work confidently unsupervised
  • Enthusiastic and committed, a team player, flexible, physically able to carry out the role, sensitive to patient needs

Salary – £30,000-£40,000 pa, depending on experience
