POST PURPOSE SUMMARY

  • To undertake X-ray examinations as an operator in accordance with IR(ME)R 2000, under indirect    supervision by senior staff members.
  • To justify medical exposures using the Department’s IR(ME)R Examination Protocols to ensure a safe effective x-ray service to all patients.
  • To produce a good quality diagnostic image whilst keeping the radiation dose as low as is reasonably practicable.
  • To assess and treat a workload of patients whilst maintaining a high standard of care to all patients and staff.
  • To comply with company, departmental, health and safety and Data protection policies.
  • To maintain at all times patients’ privacy and confidentiality

 

SCOPE AND RANGE

  • To carry out x-ray examinations to the required standard
  • To carry out x-ray examinations with supervision, (direct or indirect) after the induction period
  • To be responsible for radiation protection of patients/carers/other staff during x-ray procedures.
  • Involved in clinical instruction and training of students after the induction period.
  • May take control of an x-ray room in the absence of a senior radiographer.
  • To ensure the examination room is correctly prepared.

 

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To accept responsibility for the patient in their care during the radiographic procedure.
  • To comply with the Trusts policies
  • To undertake X-ray examinations as an operator in accordance with the IR(ME)R 2000 and to know the limits of practice and when to seek advice or refer to another professional.
  • To justify medical exposures using the Department’s IR(ME)R Examination Protocols, to ensure a safe and effective x-ray service.
  • To be aware of and practice all radiation protection procedures.
  • To manage a workload of patients whilst maintaining a high standard of radiography and care of the patients.
  • Be able to contribute effectively to work undertaken as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • To assist with audit projects as required.

 

SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

The Band 5 Radiographer will be required to use the following equipment:

  • Static x-ray rooms (Digital Radiography)
  • Mobile x-ray unit and image intensifier
  • PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System)
  • Computerised hospital patient information system
  • Review (results reporting system).
  • Beds, trolleys and wheel chairs
  • Patient handling/moving equipment
  • Oxygen cylinders

 

Also:

To know:

  • The site and position of the patient resuscitation equipment (adult and paediatric).
  • All equipment that may come attached to a patient from the ward e.g. IV infusion pumps, Catheter bags etc.
  • To know the Trust procedures for medical emergencies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Diploma /BSc in radiography and HPC registration

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in general radiography during training or in a previous position
  • Experience in out of hours working during training
