Gynaecomastia Surgery

Gynaecomastia, or enlarged male breasts, is a condition which can greatly affect your self-esteem. At Phoenix Hospital Group, we understand the complexities of this condition. That’s why we offer personalised gynaecomastia surgery.

Gynaecomastia surgery: a treatment overview

Gynaecomastia is a condition that affects men and causes enlarged breasts. Gynaecomastia can affect one or both breasts and one breast may grow larger.

Although gynaecomastia can affect your confidence, male chest reduction surgery can treat it.

Gynaecomastia surgery removes excess tissue growth, but it can also tighten your chest area and remove excess skin to create a flatter, more masculine appearance.

Causes of gynaecomastia

A hormonal imbalance that increases your oestrogen levels is the standard cause of gynaecomastia. This leads to the development of excess breast tissue growth and an increase in the size of your breasts.

Other causes of gynaecomastia can include:

  • Specific medications
  • Health conditions like an overactive thyroid and kidney disease
  • Taking anabolic steroids

Is male chest reduction surgery right for me?

Chest reduction surgery might suit you if you’re unhappy with the size of your breasts or you’ve gained excess skin from weight loss.

However, we cannot use gynaecomastia surgery to treat enlarged breasts due to being overweight. The reason for this is that, if we remove the excess fat and you’re still overweight, your enlarged breasts may grow back.

Gynaecomastia surgery may help if you’ve lost weight, your breasts remain enlarged or your skin has sagged.

Our team will happily discuss your unique circumstances if you’re unsure whether gynaecomastia surgery would suit you. That way, you can feel more confident in your decision.

What to expect during your gynaecomastia surgery

We perform male chest reduction surgery under general anaesthetic, so you’ll be asleep and comfortable throughout. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make an incision around your nipple.

Next, they’ll remove the fatty tissue with either a scalpel or using liposuction (a machine that sucks fat from the body). They may also cut excess skin to help shape your breasts. If they remove a lot of tissue and skin, they may need to reposition your nipples to create a natural appearance.

Once the surgeon has removed enough tissue and skin, they will stitch the incisions, and we’ll take you to the recovery room. Gynaecomastia surgery typically takes around one and a half hours, and you must stay in the hospital overnight so we can monitor your initial recovery.

We’ll provide all the information you need about your surgery beforehand so you know what to expect. We’ll also give you detailed aftercare advice to manage your recovery at home effectively.

Recovering from male chest reduction surgery

It can take several weeks to fully recover from gynaecomastia surgery. You’ll likely need to take a few days off work and regular activities as you may experience discomfort.

For the first few weeks, your breasts may be swollen and bruised, but we’ll provide you with a compression garment to wear that helps support healing and minimise swelling. We’ll also tell you if and when you need your stitches to be removed.

For the first three weeks, please avoid:

  • stretching
  • strenuous exercise
  • heavy lifting

It can take up to six weeks to return to your normal activities.

Your final gynaecomastia surgery results can take up to six months as your body needs to heal and the swelling must reduce completely.

Do not hesitate to contact our team, who will happily provide support if you have questions about your recovery at any time.

Gynaecomastia surgery FAQs

Will gynaecomastia surgery cause scarring?

You may have some scarring around your nipples. However, this should fade in several months.

Are there any risks in male chest reduction surgery?

All surgical procedures have possible risks and gynaecomastia is no different. These potential risks include scarring, infection, loss of nipple sensation and developing lumps in your breast. However, our team takes every precaution to minimise risks where possible.

Can my breast grow again after gynaecomastia surgery?

Gynaecomastia surgery offers a permanent solution to your condition. In other words, the removed tissue will not grow back. However, excess tissue growth may reoccur if you gain significant weight or take medications that encourage male breast growth.

Can I have gynaecomastia surgery on the NHS?

Male chest reduction surgery is not generally available on the NHS. That’s why Phoenix Hospital Group offers expert-led gynaecomastia surgery for men experiencing the condition.
