CT Scanning
Your CT Scan
A CT scan (sometimes called CAT scan) is a painless x-ray test that helps clinicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT imaging uses special x-ray equipment to produce a number of images of the inside of the body. A computer then processes them to produce cross-sectional pictures of the area being studied. CT scans provide greater clarity than conventional x-ray exams and allow doctors to see organs and soft tissues as well as bones.
Our new CT Scanner We are pleased to offer a brand new state-of-the-art Toshiba CT scanner providing faster and more efficient scanning with lower doses of radiation.
On the day of your scan
The radiographer will bring you down to the department, explain the procedure and go through any relevant past medical history for scans requiring an injection of contrast.
You may be asked to change into a gown for the scan. The Radiographer will take you into the scanning room. We will ask you to lie on the scanner bed. During the scan the bed moves slowly through the centre of the scanner. The scanner is open (about 2metres square and 1 metre deep) you will experience no discomfort and the scanner will not touch you.
You will just need to relax and lie as still as possible during the examination. We may ask you to hold your breath for brief periods during the scan. The scan will normally take up to 30 minutes. Please give yourself plenty of time for your appointment.
The Radiographer operating the scanner can both see and hear you clearly throughout the study at all times and we can speak to you through an intercom.

After your scan
There should be no after effects of the CT scan and you may continue to eat and drink as usual. If you have been given any contrast we recommend you keep yourself well hydrated after the scan.
Your results
Following the examination you will be supplied with a CD consisting of images from the scan. The images are processed and reviewed by a Consultant Radiologist who will provide your doctor with a report, this usually takes between 24 -48 hours. You should then make a follow up appointment with your doctor to discuss these results.
