Breast Fat Transfer

At Phoenix Hospital Group, we offer various breast enhancement services that aren’t limited to breast augmentation. We also perform breast fat transfer surgery to increase the size of your breasts for natural-looking results.

Our plastic surgeons provide bespoke results based on your goals and needs so you can feel confident with your breasts’ appearance.

What is a breast fat transfer?

Breast fat transfer uses liposuction techniques to remove fat cells from areas of your body and inject fat cells into your breasts. The transfer increases the size of your breasts and reduces the area where we removed the fat.

Breast fat transfers are an alternative to breast augmentation with implants, but they still provide an increased breast size and natural results. Breast fat transfer surgery also has fewer risks than breast augmentation.

Who is breast fat transfer suitable for?

Breast fat transfer might suit you if:

  • You want a subtle increase in breast size
  • You don’t wish to have implants but still want larger breasts
  • You’ve lost breast volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • You want to contour more areas than just your breasts, combining liposuction with breast enhancement

Breast fat transfer might not be suitable for you if you have a low percentage of body fat.

If you’re considering breast fat transfer surgery, our team will happily discuss your options and suitability during a comprehensive consultation.

Breast fat transfer procedure

We perform our breast fat transfer surgery as an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home on the same day. We use a general anaesthetic, so you won’t be able to drive yourself home.

For the procedure, we’ll first use liposuction techniques to remove fat cells from the previously agreed areas of your body. During liposuction, the surgeon inserts a thin vacuum-like tool under the skin to suck out fat cells. The removed fat cells are then purified before being inserted into special syringes and injected into different areas of your breasts. The surgeon will then carefully layer the fat into levels within the chest wall to create a natural contour and shape.

Some fat cells may die after they’re injected, so we will inject more fat cells than needed to meet your desired results.

Breast fat transfer recovery

Once we complete your procedure, we’ll fit a compression garment to help the fat deposits settle into place. We’ll monitor your initial recovery before discharging you with all the information you need to support your recovery at home.

For the first three weeks, it’s usual to experience some discomfort, bruising and swelling in your breasts and the liposuction-treated areas. It can also take up to six months for the swelling to go down.

While at home, try to sleep on your back to avoid pressure on your breasts. Loose-fitting clothing may also be more comfortable than restrictive, tight clothes.

Breast fat transfer surgery results

It can take up to six months to see the results of your breast fat transfer procedure. The fat cells need to settle into the new area where they’ve been injected. However, they will remain there for life — so your results last a lifetime.

Breast fat transfer FAQs

How long does breast fat transfer take?

Breast fat transfer surgery can take up to three hours to complete.

Does breast fat transfer have any risks?

All surgical procedures have potential risks, but our highly experienced plastic surgeons will do everything possible to minimise them.

Some of the main risks can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Breast cysts
  • Fat cell death

Does breast fat transfer affect mammograms?

No, your mammogram results should still be accurate, as additional fat in your breasts won’t restrict visibility. Always tell your doctor that you’ve had a breast fat transfer before your breast cancer screening, as microcalcifications can sometimes develop (tiny hardened bits of fat). These can show up on your test and provide a false positive for breast cancer.

How long do the results of breast fat transfer last?

Your breast fat transfer results can last a lifetime. However, gaining or losing significant amounts of weight can change your results over time.
