Is breast enlargement right for me?

Everyone’s reasons for choosing breast enlargement are unique.

You might be considering a breast enlargement if you want to:

  • Restore fullness lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight changes
  • Enhance naturally smaller breasts for a fuller shape
  • Create better balance and symmetry between your breasts

At Phoenix Hospital Group, we’ll provide the time and information you need to decide if this procedure is correct for you. You’ll meet with both your dedicated patient adviser and cosmetic surgeon to discuss your expectations, any concerns and the results you’d like to achieve.

We’ll always be honest about your suitability for surgery. Your safety and wellbeing are our highest priorities, and we’ll only recommend breast enlargement if we believe it’s the best choice for you.

Your breast enlargement journey with Phoenix Hospital Group

Before surgery, you’ll have detailed consultations to discuss your goals, review your medical history and explore your desired look. It allows you to ask any questions you may have about breast enlargement surgery.

Your surgeon will also explain the potential risks so you’re fully informed. Surgery will only go ahead if it’s the right choice for you and the benefits outweigh any risks.

What happens on the day of my procedure?

When you arrive, a team member will welcome you and show you to your private room. You’ll meet your surgeon and anaesthetist for final checks before the procedure.

We usually ask patients to arrive a few hours before surgery. It gives us time to confirm you’re well enough for surgery, answer any last questions and help you feel comfortable.

Your surgeon will perform breast enlargement under a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be asleep throughout. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, they will make tiny incisions on your chest.

These are typically around four to five centimetres long, and they’ll place them in one of three areas:

  • The infra-mammary incision (under the breast fold)
  • The circumareolar incision (around the nipple)
  • The axillary incision (in the armpit)

Each option has its advantages, which we’ll discuss during your consultation.

After placing the implants through the incisions, your surgeon may adjust the nipple position if needed to suit your new breast size. They will close the incisions with dissolvable stitches and apply dressings before the team takes you to the recovery room.

Breast enlargement recovery

Once your surgery is complete, we will return you to your private room and help you get comfortable. We’ll fit a soft, supportive compression garment to reduce swelling and protect your new shape.

You may be in the hospital overnight, or you may be able to leave a few hours following your surgery; this will depend on the type of surgery.

You can go home once you are feeling well and eating and drinking. A friend or family member should take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

You’ll likely need to take around two weeks off work to rest and recover. Our nurse will see you within the first two weeks to remove your dressings and check your progress, and you will meet your surgeon again in about six weeks to review your results.

Breast enlargement results

You’ll notice a change in size and shape immediately after surgery, although swelling is usual in the first few weeks. As your body heals, your breasts will gradually settle into a softer and more natural position.

You can usually see final results within a few months once the swelling has resolved completely. Manufacturers design modern implants to provide long-lasting enhancement, but your breasts may still change over time due to ageing, weight fluctuations or pregnancy.

You can discuss options such as implant removal, implant replacement or a breast uplift with your surgeon if your preferences change in the future.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about breast enlargement

We understand that deciding to have breast enlargement is a big step, and you may have many questions. Here are some of the most common queries we hear from patients, along with clear and honest answers.

How long does breast augmentation with implants take?

A breast augmentation with implants under a general anaesthetic usually lasts between one and two hours. You’ll arrive at the hospital a few hours before your operation. Most patients go home the same day, although you may stay overnight before being discharged the next morning if we scheduled your procedure for the afternoon.

What is the long-term impact of breast augmentation surgery?

Modern implants can last for many years, often well beyond the ten-year lifespan once thought typical. You may need further surgery at some point to replace, remove or adjust your implants, particularly if you’re younger at the time of your first procedure.

Where are breast implants inserted?

Implants can be positioned either under the chest muscle or over it. The choice depends on your breast tissue, skin quality and desired result. Placement under the muscle can create a softer upper curve and may reduce the risk of capsular contracture, which is the hardening of scar tissue around the implant.

How are the incisions closed after breast implants are inserted?

We usually use dissolvable stitches, which do not need removal. The incisions are covered with dressings, which our nurse will remove at your first follow-up appointment with them.

How much scarring will I have after breast enlargement?

Most patients have a small incision under each breast, about 4 to 5 centimetres long. Once healed, it sits discreetly in the natural crease and fades over time.

How much does breast augmentation with implants cost?

The cost depends on the surgery, your implant choice and whether you’re combining it with another procedure. We’ll provide a clear, fixed price that includes your consultations, hospital care and aftercare, with no hidden charges.

Can breast enlargement be combined with other procedures?

We can combine your breast enlargement surgery with a breast uplift for improved shape and position, or with other cosmetic procedures as part of a personalised plan.

How long do I need to wear a compression garment after surgery?

We usually recommend wearing your post-surgical compression garment for around six weeks. This garment helps reduce swelling, supports your breasts as they heal and protects your new shape.

When can I return to work after breast enlargement?

Most patients take about two weeks off work. The exact timing will depend on the work you do and how quickly you recover.

When is it safe to start exercising again?

Gentle movement, such as walking, can begin soon after surgery, but we advise avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for six weeks. Your surgeon will guide you on when to gradually return to your regular routine.

When can I travel after breast enlargement surgery?

Short journeys are usually fine once you feel comfortable, but we recommend avoiding long-haul travel for six weeks. This precaution helps reduce the risk of complications and ensures you’re available for your follow-up appointments.
