Who is a good candidate for breast enlargement surgery?

While there is no ‘ideal’ candidate for a breast enlargement as everyone is different, there are a few factors that will make the surgery and recovery process easier for you.

The most important is that you are not a smoker, as this can affect wound healing and hinder the recovery process. You should also be a stable weight, and not be planning to get pregnant any time soon. It is also important if you are thinking of getting breast enlargement surgery to have realistic expectations of the process. You can read further about what to expect in the FAQ section below.

If you do not meet these conditions, it is possible your surgeon will advise that breast enlargement surgery may not be suitable for you.

How is breast enlargement surgery done?

Breast enlargement is done under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will start by making an incision in the lower breast fold and creating a pocket for the implant. The implant is then inserted using a sterile approach and the incision is closed up with dissolving stitches. You will then be put in a compression vest which you will have to wear for 6 weeks while the area heals.

You may be in the hospital overnight, or you may be able to leave a few hours following your surgery; this will depend on the type of surgery.

Breast enlargement process

The first step in your breast enlargement journey will be your initial consultation with the surgeon. During this consultation, you will discuss your medical history, measurements and your goals for surgery. Your surgeon will tell you about the options available to you and can show you implants to give you an idea of how your new breasts might look.

You will then have some time to go away and think about it, and you may wish to see your surgeon for a second or third consultation to make sure you have made the right choice. Once you have decided to go ahead with the surgery, you will be booked in.

One week following your surgery, you will have a post-op check with a nurse. You will see your surgeon again after several weeks to ensure you are recovering as expected and that there are no complications.

Breast enlargement recovery

Recovering from breast enlargement surgery will take different amounts of time depending on the individual.

Patients usually take 1-2 weeks off work as it takes about this long for the skin to heal. At this point, you can start moisturising and massaging the scar.

You will need to wear a compression vest for 6 weeks, and you will be asked not to go to the gym or do any strenuous physical activity for 6 weeks. You will also be advised to sleep upright on your back with lots of pillows.

Breast enlargement FAQs

Is breast enlargement surgery safe?

Breast enlargement surgery is generally very safe. It has a good complication profile and serious complications are rare.

Are there any risks of breast enlargement surgery?

Like any surgery, breast enlargement surgery does have some risks that patients will need to be aware of. These include:

  • Capsular contracture – when scar tissue shrinks around the implant, leading to the breast feeling hard
  • Infection
  • Wound taking a long time to heal
  • Bleeding and blood clots
  • Implant rotating within the breast
  • Nerve problems in the nipples

However, the vast majority of people who undergo breast enlargement surgery will experience no complications. You can minimise your risk of developing complications by following all post-surgery advice from your surgeon.

How long does a breast enlargement take?

Breast enlargement surgery usually takes 1-1.5 hours, but can sometimes be quicker.

How much scarring is left after breast enlargement surgery?

There usually isn’t much visible scarring left after breast enlargement surgery. This is because one incision is made for each breast under the breast crease. It is usually 4-5cm and, once healed, will be hidden in the natural crease of the breast.

Do you offer finance options?

Yes, we offer finance options for breast enlargement surgery. You can discuss this with our appointments booking team when you phone to arrange your initial consultation.
