What is included in the package?

This bone health check-up includes:

  • DEXA scan
  • Follow-up consultation with Professor David Reid MBE

A DEXA scan uses low doses of X-ray to measure how dense your bones are, which can be used to diagnose osteoporosis. You will be sent a risk factor questionnaire to fill in prior to your scan, which will ascertain your risk of osteoporosis.

A follow-up consultation with our expert rheumatologist Professor David Reid MBE, will take place either virtually or in-person depending on your preference. Professor Reid will go through your results with you and discuss your risk factors due to lifestyle choices and other factors outside of your control. If required, a treatment plan will be created for you to help improve your bone health and slow the progression of osteoporosis.

 

What is included in the package?

What does it look for?

Primarily, this check-up is designed to look for osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones, making them more prone to breaks and fractures. In many patients, it takes a broken bone to establish that they have osteoporosis, so this check-up aims to identify your risk or early signs, so that measures can be taken to prevent or slow the progression of the condition before any bones get broken.

Early diagnosis will enable patients to receive the correct treatment, which relieves symptoms and slows progression.

What does it look for?

How much does an Osteoporosis Test cost?

Our comprehensive package costs £450, and this includes your consultation with Professor Reid as well as your advanced osteoporosis assessment and DEXA scan. This is a saving of £75 compared to booking the scan and the consultation separately.

Who is the Osteoporosis Test for?

You might want to get an osteoporosis check-up if you are concerned about your risk of osteoporosis. Several factors can increase your risk of developing osteoporosis, so it is worth getting checked if you:

  • Are over the age of 50
  • Are a woman who is menopausal or post-menopausal
  • Have family members with osteoporosis or who are prone to breaking bones
  • Smoke and/or drink a lot of alcohol
  • Have a low body weight
  • Get little/no physical activity
  • Don’t have much calcium or vitamin D in your diet

Professor David Reid MBE

Professor Reid is is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Osteoporosis Specialist who has been involved in providing specialist Osteoporosis services with a particular emphasis on bone densitometry for 30 years.

Professor Reid is internationally acknowledged as one of the leading authorities on bone health. He was awarded an MBE in the 2021 New Year’s Honours List for his work on osteoporosis.
