Tummy Tuck London (Abdominoplasty)
If you are considering a tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty as it is medically known) we can help. A tummy tuck is a safe and effective way of reducing stretched or sagging skin. Usually the result of pregnancy or significant weight loss, surgical excess skin and fat removal can restore confidence in your body and self-image.
At Weymouth Street Hospital we understand the impact excess skin can have on feeling self-conscious, finding clothes that fit well, or simply being able to relax on the beach in swimwear. Everyone and their body has been on a different journey over their lifetime and so each person will benefit from a different type of surgery. One of our specialist consultant team will examine you, discuss available options and explore your concerns and expectations. Together you will agree on the course of action which will give the best aesthetic result possible.
Is a tummy tuck the right option for me?
Surgical options such as a tummy tuck are always best after non-invasive methods such as diet and exercise have been attempted. If after this you still have some remaining abdominal fat, a weakened abdominal wall or loose or sagging skin, a consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic surgeons at our London clinic is a sensible right decision.
Which Abdominoplasty is best for me?
You may have heard a number of terms, mini abdominoplasty, full abdominoplasty or ‘Brazilian’ (Lipo) abdominoplasty. These options differ in the amount of skin taken, fat removed and whether underlying muscle repair is required. Again these will be explained in full before any decision is reached.
The Abdominoplasty Procedure
A tummy tuck requires general anaesthetic which puts you to sleep. An incision is made along the bikini line before excess skin is removed. If large amounts of skin are removed some vertical incisions may be needed to leave you with a flatter stomach and tighter skin. The belly button may need to be freed from the underlying tissue so it can be repositioned in a more natural position.
If you have had a lipo or mini-abdominoplasty, you will likely be able to return home on the same day as the surgery as these operations are less invasive.
Your Recovery
Recovery from abdominoplasty naturally includes some discomfort and bruising which will be appropriately managed by pain relief medication provided by your consultant. To ensure that you heal as quickly as possible and are left with the best aesthetic result, we do recommend reduced physical activity for a while after the operation.
The exact time for reduced activity will vary from person to person, and your needs will be assessed in conjunction with your surgeon.
You can usually return to work after 1 to 2 weeks by which time the swelling will have started to reduce. For physical activity, reducing strain on your abdomen is the priority, so light activity can be resumed after 6 to 8 weeks by which time the area will have mostly healed. To reduce the risk of damage to the area, more moderate exercise, including sex, may be more comfortable from 6 to 12 weeks after the operation.
Our post-operative care team along with your consultant will guide you through the recovery process ensuring any questions or concerns are answered.
Will abdominoplasty remove my stretch marks?
When discussing your upcoming surgery, the most suitable abdominoplasty procedure will be decided with your consultant. The type of abdominoplasty decided upon will dictate the amount of skin that is removed.
Stretch marks that lie beyond the skin that is removed will remain after surgery. However, tightening of the skin has the effect of reducing the appearance these remaining stretch marks.
Can I have children after my tummy tuck?
Due to the stretching of skin and muscles that result from pregnancy, conceiving is not recommended after abdominoplasty. It is for this reason that the best age to undergo a tummy tuck is after you have had your last child.
How long do tummy tucks last?
The results of the operation can last for over 10 years, but exactly how long you will retain a good aesthetic appearance depends on many factors, including lifestyle. Regular exercise and avoiding weight gain and loss after the operation will guard against future stretching, distension and sagging of the skin.
