I’ve researched my symptoms and it says I could be menopausal? What should I do next?
If you’ve been feeling off, noticing changes in your energy levels, or struggling with physical or emotional symptoms that won’t let up, it can be easy to dismiss these as just a part of “getting older.” But ignoring symptoms like restless sleep, fatigue, decreased libido, intense premenstrual syndrome (PMS), persistent migraines, or an increase in anxiety and low mood can impact your quality of life and should be taken seriously. It’s important to remember that these symptoms may be linked to perimenopause, a transitional stage in women’s health that often begins around age 40, although for some, it can start even earlier.
Perimenopause is a normal, natural phase as hormone levels begin to shift. However, the symptoms associated with it shouldn’t affect your well-being, relationships, or work life. Many women struggle with the effects of perimenopause on their overall health, but it’s essential not to just “live with it.” These symptoms could signify an increased risk of additional health conditions like cardiovascular disease, especially when left unmanaged. Reaching out to a healthcare provider or gynaecologist can be a key step toward identifying solutions to regain control over your health.
Interestingly, the symptoms we often attribute to perimenopause may also signal other health issues. Here are some examples:
- Irregular or absent menstrual cycles or periods that become significantly heavier or lighter can sometimes be due to an underactive thyroid rather than hormonal changes alone.
- Night sweats and hot flashes may be caused by lifestyle factors such as alcohol use or certain medications, or they could indicate thyroid conditions or other underlying health issues.
- Migraines might not only be linked to hormone fluctuations but could also be due to increased blood pressure or even specific deficiencies.
A more intense PMS, with symptoms such as irritability, low mood, and bloating, is a common feature of perimenopause. However, it may also be linked to nutrient imbalances, and many women find that adding Vitamin D3, fresh fruits, and vegetables to their diet and cutting down on processed foods and sugars can significantly improve. - Vaginal discomfort, dryness, or itching could be due to decreased estrogen levels, but often, environmental factors play a role. Allergies or sensitivities to intimate washes, and laundry additives like softeners and disinfectants, can lead to discomfort. If there is also an abnormal discharge, infections like thrush or bacterial vaginosis may be involved.
These various possibilities emphasise the importance of seeking medical advice. By discussing your symptoms with a GP or gynaecologist, you can gain clarity on whether further investigations are necessary to understand the underlying causes. Your healthcare provider can work with you to pinpoint what’s causing your symptoms and explore treatment options, whether lifestyle changes, supplements, or medications to restore balance and improve your quality of life.
