Scope: Weymouth Hospital (Ward level 1, 2 & 3)

The Weymouth Hospital, 9 Harley Street and 25 Harley Street are part of the Phoenix Hospital Group. The hospital is an acute care hospital, registered for 17 beds, accepting planned and emergency/urgent surgical admissions, with a focus on Cosmetic Surgery. The Consulting and Diagnostic rooms at 9 and 25 Harley Street are part of the Phoenix Hospital Group.  The clinic is closely affiliated to Weymouth Street Hospital and provides pre-operative consulting, minor procedures and diagnostics and post-operative follow up care for patients of the visiting consultants.  Consultants, patients and relatives need to be dealt with sensitively and efficiently in order to retain their custom.

Role Purpose

  • To ensure that standards of patients care are consistently maintained at all times in accordance with agreed operational policies as a skilled member of the nursing team
  • To promote and safeguard the well-being and interests of all patients, employees and visitors
  • To ensure that the highest standards of patient and customer care are maintained at all times
  • To assist senior staff in the management of the hospital
  • To provide effective leadership and management in their absence

 

Key Accountabilities & Output

  • Assess, implement and evaluate nursing care with an evidence based approach, providing a high standard of clinical and customer care to all patients
  • Assist with the creation and review of patient centered standards of care
  • Understand the role of the Ward Manager and to support them in achieving hospital business plan
  • Promote an environment receptive to change
  • Attend and participate in ward meetings
  • Participate in the mentorship of HCA’s and new starters
  • Provide a supportive environment staff
  • Support colleagues and work co-operatively to promote good team morale on the ward
  • Identify areas for personal and professional development plus that of junior staff
  • Maintain and expand professional knowledge participating in nursing / hospital educational programs
  • Be able to initiate hospital emergency procedures
  • Assist in the provision of a ward environment conducive to learning
  • Act as a professional and positive role model all to colleagues
  • Adhere to nursing and hospital policies
  • Complete an orientation program for new staff
  • Effective communication with team members and other colleagues in the hospital
  • Understand how your actions impact on the marketing of the hospital
  • Respond to telephone calls appropriately
  • Resolve patient / customer concerns where possible and escalate issues if not resolved
  • Promote cost effective utilization of resources
  • Become competent in the use of the in-house computer system
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as required and requested by the Ward Manager and other senior staff
  • Taking of blood samples as required
  • Post-operative dressings as required
  • Making appointments for radiology test as required
  • Chaperoning patients as required
  • Ensuring all charges are recorded and processed accurately and in a timely way
  • Participate in Ward audits

 

Qualifications / Skills & Knowledge / Qualities:

  • Registered Nurse with 2+ years post qualification experience
  • Presently working in an acute hospital environment – essential
  • Experience in a private hospital environment  -desirable
  • Experience in mentoring colleagues and HCA’s Enthusiastic and committed, a team player, flexible, physically able to carry out the role, sensitive to patient needs

 

Clinical Governance

All staff with clinical responsibilities are expected to work within the clinical governance arrangements agreed by the PHG. This is through an established framework through which clinical staff are continuously accountable for improving the quality of services and safeguarding high standards of care by creating an environment in which excellent care will flourish.   All clinical staff are expected to maintain appropriate knowledge about, and involvement in, agreed strategies and programmes to continually improve their standards of clinical care through:

  • Patient and user involvement
  • Risk and complaints management
  • Clinical effectiveness and audit programmes
  • Continuous Professional Development.

 

Infection control

All staff have a responsibility to prevent and control infections.  This includes ensuring personal and team compliance with all relevant policies; especially hand hygiene, the dress code and MRSA screening policies.

 

Working patterns 

Staff working in any department where an on ‘call rota’ operates will be required to participate in the rota. Managers will discuss with staff the level of ‘on call’ cover required taking into account their individual circumstances. Staff members must remain flexible and able respond to needs of the service, there are times when it is necessary to match staffing levels with peaks and troughs in activity.

 

Staff Management

All post holders with staff management responsibilities are expected to support the development of their staff through feedback, by conducting an appraisal at least once a year, by assisting in the development and implementation of personal development plans, as well as ensuring their staff are kept informed of developments across PHG or in the service area through the most appropriate communications in your service area.

 

Health & Safety Policy

Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment for employees and visitors.

 

Safeguarding children and Child Protection

It is the responsibility of all staff to safeguard children and promote their welfare.  Child protection issues if identified must be notified promptly in accordance with PHG policy and procedures.

 

Continuing Professional Development

All staff are responsible for his/her continuing professional development including revalidation and to take a proactive approach to maintaining personal and professional effectiveness in an evolving role.

 

Data Protection

If you are required to obtain, process and/or use information held on a computer or word processor you should do it in a fair and lawful way.  You should hold data only for the specific registered purpose and not use or disclose it in any way incompatible with such a purpose and ought to disclose data only to authorised persons or organisations as instructed.  Breaches of confidence in relation to data will result in disciplinary action, which may result in dismissal.

 

Confidentiality

You are required to maintain confidentiality of any information concerning patients or staff which you have access to or may be given in the course of your work, in accordance with current policy on confidentiality at PHG.

 

Professional Registration

If you are employed in an area of work which requires membership of a professional body in order to practice (e.g. Nursing & Midwifery Council) it is a condition precedent of your employment to maintain membership of such a professional body and revalidation.  You are required to advise the Director of Clinical Services if your professional body in any way limits or changes the terms of your registration.  Failure to remain registered or to comply with the relevant code of practice may result in temporary downgrading, suspension from duty and/or disciplinary action which may result in the termination of your employment.  It is also your responsibility to comply with the relevant body’s code of practice.
