The GMC has introduced New Guidelines to protect cosmetic surgery patients and clampdown on rogue surgeons who put profits ahead of clients’ health.

New GMC guidelines for Doctors

We have always followed this good practice and are delighted to see these official guidelines published.

The new rules state that doctors should follow acceptable practice when they work within the Cosmetic Surgery Industry.

The new Guidance says that doctors must not offer incentives for patients.

The Rotal College of Surgeons is also calling on the Government to introduce new legal powers to “give teeth” to new plans to tell patients which doctors are certified to carry out cosmetic surgery.

Under the new GMC guidance, doctors must not offer patients “two-for-one” deals or other promotions and prizes, nor make “unjustifiable claims about interventions”.

They must also seek their patients’ consent to a procedure rather than delegating this to somebody else.

Doctors must also:

:: make sure patients are given enough time and information before they decide whether to have a procedure. Patients should not feel rushed or pressured;

:: consider a patient’s psychological needs;

:: recognise and work within the limits of their competence;

:: give patients written information;

:: provide continuity of care. Patients must know who to contact if they experience any complications. They must also have full details of any medicines or implants;

:: make full and accurate records of consultations and contribute to national systems, including registers for devices such as breast implants.

The move follows a 2013 report from NHS medical director, Sir Bruce Keogh, following the PIP breast implant scandal, which warned that advertising practices in the industry were highly misleading.

It said time-limited deals, financial inducements, package deals such as reduced prices for referring a friend and competition prizes were “socially irresponsible” and should be banned by professional codes of practice.

We at Weymouth Hospital believe that having a procedure with a fully qualified Plastic Surgeon is really important and reassure our patients that all our Surgeons are FRCS (Plasts) this means they hold a specialism in Plastic Surgery. They are highly competent in performing these complex procedures.

Ms Elizabeth Ball is a Consultant Gynaecologist with an interest in pelvic pain, endometriosis and fibroid.
